AI for OSINT: Research Automation Without Hallucinations
How to use large language models to speed up open-source research while keeping every claim verified, sourced and disclosed.
What AI is good at
Large language models are powerful research assistants. They summarize long documents, translate sources in dozens of languages, extract names, places and dates into tables, build timelines, suggest search terms you had not thought of and turn notes into a clear first draft. Used well, they save hours on every report.
What AI gets wrong
Models generate plausible text, not verified facts. They can invent sources, quotes, statistics and dates, and they state errors with the same confidence as truths. Their knowledge also stops at a cutoff date unless they can search the web, and even then they can misread what they find.
Rules for AI-assisted research
- Every factual claim in a published report must link to a primary source that a human has opened and checked.
- Ask the model for its sources, then open every one. Delete any claim whose source does not exist or does not say what the model claims.
- Ground the model in documents you supply (upload the report, filing or transcript) rather than relying on its memory.
- Never paste private personal information about anyone into a third-party AI service.
- Disclose AI assistance in the report, with the model and the date.
A prompt pattern that works
Give the model a role, the source material and strict rules: “You are an intelligence analyst. Using only the attached documents, list every claim about [topic] with the page number it comes from. If the documents do not answer a question, say so. Do not use outside knowledge.” Then verify the output against the pages it cites.
